Nystagmus in infancy.

چکیده
Spontaneous nystagmus in infants may be present at birth but more frequently appears in the first 6 months.' We present a classification in which nystagmus with an onset before 6 months is called early onset nystagmus (EON) and is divided into three categories: sensory defect nystagmus (SDN) in which there is a proven sensory impairment, congenital idiopathic nystagmus (CIN) (sometimes called 'motor nystagmus'2) in which no visual or neurological impairment can be found, and neurological nystagmus (NN) which is associated with neurological disease. Though the distinction between SDN and CIN is made by many authors,36 they are sometimes collectively called congenital nystagmus. The presentation ofall types ofnystagmus can be similar, but in infants it is important to differentiate between SDN and CIN because of the different underlying defects, investigation, management, and genetic counselling (Fig 1). Congenital idiopathic nystagmus CIN is diagnosed after exclusion of any underlying defect. It normally affects acuity moderately,78 and estimates of its incidence vary from 1 per 350 to 1 per 20000,9-" reflecting the different definitions of 'congenital nystagmus' and ways of data collection.

Clinical Congenital Nystagmus, Evaluation and Treatment
Objectives At the conclusion of this program, participants should be able to: 1. Evaluate the child with nystagmus more efficiently. 2. Decide when neuro-imaging and electrophysiology studies of children with nystagmus are appropriate. 3. Recognize the potential neurologic problems presenting with nystagmus in infancy. Questions True or False: 1. Upbeating nystagmus in infancy is usually a sign...
متن کاملNystagmus in infancy and childhood: characteristics and evidence for treatment.
PURPOSE To discuss the common characteristics of infants and children with nystagmus and review treatments and their evidence. METHODS The NEI-sponsored classification of eye movement abnormalities and strabismus and a PubMed search for papers from 1995 through 2005 on interventions for Infantile Nystagmus Syndrome (INS) are reviewed. RESULTS The review of treatments revealed 18 papers on s...
متن کاملClinical and ocular motor analysis of congenital nystagmus in infancy.
PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to identify the clinical and ocular motility characteristics of congenital nystagmus and to establish the range of waveforms present in infancy. BACKGROUND The clinical condition of congenital nystagmus usually begins in infancy and may or may not be associated with visual sensory system abnormalities. Little is known about its specific waveforms in infan...

A 11-year-old boy with hypothyroidism developed generalized muscle hypertrophy and proximal muscular weakness. Electromyographic findings were suggestive of myopathy. He had had congenital nystagmus (CN) since early infancy. Although the association of childhood hypothyroidism and CN has been documented before, the triad of hypothyroidism, hypertrophic myopathy and CN exhibited by the patient i...
متن کاملLatent nystagmus and acquired pendular nystagmus masquerading as spasmus nutans.
SUMMARY We used ocular motility recordings to identify the characteristics of a rare combination of conjugate, horizontal jerk, and pendular nystagmus in a 9-year-old boy. The clinical diagnoses were amblyopia, left esotropia, congenital nystagmus, and an apparently uniocular pendular nystagmus that mimicked spasmus nutans. Ocular motility recordings revealed an unusual latent/manifest latent n...
